Is the Drive from Denver to Breckenridge Hard in Winter?

Is the drive from Denver to Breckenridge hard in winter?

Yes, it can be. The route follows Interstate 70 over mountain grades and through the Eisenhower tunnel at 11,000 feet, and winter storms bring snow, ice, chain law closures, and long traffic backups. Thousands of visitors drive it safely every week, but Colorado enforces a traction law, and many travelers simply hire a chauffeur who drives this corridor every day.

What the drive involves

Breckenridge is about 104 miles from Denver, roughly two hours in good conditions. The road climbs from the plains to the Eisenhower Johnson tunnel, the highest vehicle tunnel in the world, then drops into Summit County. The grades are long, the weather changes fast, and a sunny morning in Denver can be a whiteout at the tunnel.

Colorado traction law

When the traction law is active, every vehicle needs snow tires, all wheel drive with adequate tread, or chains. Rental sedans on all season tires often do not qualify, and fines apply if you block the road. Storm weekends also bring metering and closures that can stretch the drive well past four hours.

When it is worst

Saturday mornings uphill and Sunday afternoons downhill are the classic crush, and storm days multiply everything. If you must drive yourself, leave very early, check conditions first on our live I-70 conditions page, and never race a closure.

The easy alternative

A private chauffeur who runs this corridor all winter handles the storm, the traction law, and the traffic while you relax. Door to door from Denver or the airport straight to your Breckenridge lodging, gear included. See our Denver to Breckenridge car service.
